Planting Guide – December and January

Annual seeds ready for Brisbane gardeners to plant directly in the ground at this time of year include:

  • Asian vegetables
  • Beans – French
  • Capsicum

  • Cucamellons
  • Eggplants
  • Lettuce (pick a cooler semi shade spot or they will bolt straight to seed in the summer heat)
  • Luffa

  • Mustard Greens  
  • New Guinea beans
  • Pumpkins   
  • Radish   
  • Rhubarb  
  • Shallots   
  • Snake Beans   
  • Squash   
  • Sweet Corn
  • Sweet Potatoes (from slips)
  • Tomatoes (only cherry varieties are recommended during summer)

While regular lettuce, kale and spinach is bolting to seed or growing bitter, now is the perfect time to plant leafy green alternatives that will thrive over summer. These include:

  • Mushroom plant
  • Okinawa spinach

  • Betel leaf
  • Ceylon spinach
  • Brazillian spinach
  • Katuk
  • Lebanese cress (semi-aquatic plant)
