Millaa-millaa vine (Elaeagnus triflora var. triflora)

  • Naturally occurring in coastal areas north of Brisbane.
  • Vigorous vine with alternate leaves to 11 cm with a silvery underside.
  • Produces white perfumed flowers in winter and spring followed by red edible fruit up to 2 cm long during spring and summer (unripe fruit shown below).
  • The fruit is high in antioxidants and can be eaten raw or used to make wine or preserves when fully ripe (immature fruit shown).
  • This rainforest vine requires moist conditions with good drainage in a semi-shaded position.
  • It is a nitrogen-fixing plant.
  • Provides shelter for birds and other small animals.
