May in the Food Forest

May is my absolute favourite month in our subtropical garden. In season now are pawpaws, citrus, edible ginger flowers and a huge abundance of pumpkins and bananas. If you are lucky enough there are also beautiful rosellas!

Also, capsicums, cherry tomatoes, loquats, custard apples, the last of the peanut butter fruits and acerola cherries.

Then there is the amazing variety of perennial leafy greens which just keep powering on year round.

Okinawa spinach, betel leaf, sambung and my favourite katuk. I just love autumn in the garden!

The heat of summer is well behind us and the weather is usually crisp and sunny with very little wind or just a nice little shower of rain to keep everything looking lush.

We will be making the most of the rain scheduled for this weekend by getting out and laying down plenty of mulch to lock the new moisture in the soil in preparation for the drier months to come between July and November. We will also be out pruning the larger trees that have served to shade the garden during the hot months to allow more sunshine in during the cold of winter. I just love how green and lush everything is right now.
