Jaboticaba (Plinia cauliflora)

Jaboticaba (Plinia cauliflora and a member of the Myrtaceae family). This Tropical and Sub-Tropical fruit tree is native to Brazil where it is very popular for its grape like fruits.

The tree is very attractive and produces fruit directly on the trunk of the tree making it as striking addition to the garden. Jaboticaba do very well in a sheltered, semi-shade position and can produce fruit within 5 years. They can be grown as a very effective hedge or allowed to grow into a large bushy specimen.

Unripe fruits.

The tree produces several crops between Spring and Autumn which can be eaten fresh (texture like a grape with a pleasant sweet earthy flavour) or made into the most marvellous jam!
